Mid Summer Magic: July Newsletter
Creating a new hypothesis in the world of space tech | Venturing into Propulsion tech: Ion Drives | End of Summer Velocity | Preparing for Wharton Investment Competition
Hey guys, it is me again, Abhilash. This newsletter is the second in a three-part series where I challenged myself to bring you guys more timely newsletters.
A bit about me
Hi, my name is Abhilash Mohapatra, and first, let’s start with a quick introduction. I’m a 15-year-old student at Lycée International (a unique school) near Paris, France. and an alum at TKS (The Knowledge Society) as part of their 23’ Innovate program. I am passionate about space exploration.
Creating a new hypothesis in the world of space tech
I worked tirelessly over 3 months and put over 100 hours to bring this project to life. I worked on revolutionizing the field of X-Ray Communication by using metamaterials to solve the issue of detection in the field. This project was the fourth and final piece of the “Focus” process I started in space tech as a part of TKS around 11 months ago.
For the first time instead of being a mere reporter and synthesizer of facts, I came up with something new. This means that the process I proposed is a first in all the literature I was able to see. Of course, it still is based on actual scientific papers and concepts though to ensure some form of feasibility.

Venturing into Propulsion tech: Ion Drives
I recently started on a journey to try to simulate an Ion Drive to gain a better understanding of how they work through doing instead of just reading. For that, I am specifically looking to replicate a Particle-in-Cell simulation similar to what companies like Busek have done before. I am still in the early stages so I will refrain from saying more but stay tuned for that.
For those who know this is the most famous picture of an ion engine.
End of Summer Velocity
This month has also marked the end of Velocity the last program as a part of TKS that I participated in. Summer Velocity has been great and I would like to thank my whole group from summer velocity with a special thanks to
for being my squad mates and encouraging me through the whole process and even running a half marathon with me and doing late-night push-ups and for organizing it all it has been a hell of a ride of self-discovery and discipline.Preparing for Wharton Investment Competition
I am proud to announce that I have accepted the position of president of my school’s economics club. As such in coordination with my advisor, we have managed to secure many interesting opportunities for the club such as exclusive meetings with partners and fund managers at various investment funds such as 3L Capital and Aberdeen. We have also managed to sign up for the Wharton Youth Investment Competition, the most prestigious youth investment competition. And to aid us in our journey we have been able to recruit a full-time fund manager to come in as a volunteer and show us the ropes of investing. As a member of the leadership team I have had to push myself to understand the financial markets better and over the year, I was able to run a virtual portfolio in which I amassed a 50% ROI.
Creating a portfolio for impact in Space tech
I have also created a portfolio bending my new know-how in finance and my passion for space tech and I invite you to check it out.
